Replacing your old windows with new Plano, TX replacement windows can be a daunting task, but if you have the right tools and know-how at your disposal, it’s definitely possible.
If you’re one of the estimated one-third of homeowners who are willing to do some of their own home improvement, you’ll be pleased to know that installing your home replacement windows is a fairly straightforward process. In most cases, all you’ll need is a hands-on attitude, a few basic tools, and a little bit of knowledge about how windows work.
Before You Begin
Before you start installing your new windows, it’s important to make sure that you have all of the necessary supplies on hand. You’ll need a level surface to work on, proper tools for the job (a drill, saws, screws, and so on), and a protective measure (such as gloves) for your skin.
1. With your level surface in place, take a look at the Window Order Form that came with your new windows. This will tell you which screws go where.
Note that the sill plate is notched (to accommodate the window trim), so make sure that the screws you use are the right length. It’s also a good idea to pre-drill pilot holes in the sill plate before screwing in the screws.
2. Remove the door and window trim by unscrewing the four screws that secure it in place. Be careful not to damage the walls or trim.
3. With the trim removed, you’ll be able to see the window frame. The frames come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so it’s important to choose the frame that’s compatible with your new windows. For most windows, the frame is made of either aluminum or vinyl.
Cut the window frame out of the new window. Make sure to measure your window accurately so you can cut the frame to the correct size. Cut along the line you measured and make sure not to cut too deep into the wall or trim.
4. To install your new windows, first measure the width of the opening and choose the window that best fits the space. Mark the location of the screws on the inside of the frame, and then remove the old window by unscrewing the screws and pulling them out.
5. Fit the new window into place, making sure that the top, bottom, and sides are lined up correctly. Replace the trim if necessary.
6. Attach the new window frame to the walls and trim. Use screws and nails to attach the frame to the walls and trim. Be careful not to puncture the walls or trim.
7. Be sure to check your work for proper alignment before screwing in the final screws. If everything looks good, you’re good to go.
